Lawn Aeration

What Is Lawn Aeration?

Lawn aeration breaks down compact soil and thick thatch to improve lawn health. This process allows more oxygen, water and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots. Annual lawn aeration will help create a stronger, healthier and more vibrant lawn.

Maggio recommends liquid lawn aeration – which uses a unique formula which allows for deeper, longer lasting results than core-aeration.

Why Should I Aerate My Lawn?

Lawn compaction and thick thatch prevent your lawn from absorbing the water, oxygen and nutrients it needs to thrive. Without aeration, your efforts to water, fertilize and care for your lawn may be going to waste due to lack of proper absorption.

Annual lawn aeration plays a vital role in any good lawn care program.

When Should I Aerate?

In Ontario, the best time to aerate your lawn is in the fall. Lawns that are warm all season long benefit from spring aeration.

How Often Do I Need To Aerate?

For a healthy, green and vibrant lawn Maggio recommends lawn aeration once a year in the fall. Annual aeration will improve lawn health and appearance and boost results of your lawn care program.

Why Should I Add Overseeding To My Service?

Aeration and overseeding go hand and hand. The fall is the best time to grow grass and to aerate, so adding an overseed treatment to your aeration is a no-brainer. Not only will your lawn thrive due to increased uptake of water, oxygen and nutrients – but overseeding will promote new grass growth and fill in thin areas for a thicker, more beautiful lawn lawn.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is thatch?

Thatch is the layer immediately below the green of your grass made up of the roots, stems and other organic matter. It can get too thick for number of reasons including poor aeration, too much water and too much nitrogen.

Why is thick thatch bad?

Too much thatch will act like a barrier between your grass and the soil blocking it from absorbing nutrients, oxygen, water and sunlight.

How do I know if I have clay soil?

It could be clay soil if:

  • it has a grey or red hue instead of dark brown
  • water doesn’t absorb but instead puddles
  • it cracks in dry weather

Try a squeeze test: wet a bit of soil and squeeze it. Does it keep its shape if you poke it? If yes, it’s likely clay soil.

Can I walk on my grass right away after aeration?

We recommend allowing the product to dry before using the lawn.

How often will I need to water after the application?

You’ll need to water your lawn for 20 minutes per area, 3x per week.

When is the best time to aerate my lawn?

Liquid aeration can be applied in the spring or fall. Deep penetration of oxygen and nutrients will promote a healthy root system which allows your grass to withstand stressful conditions.

How much does it cost?

Each property is unique, so depending on the  square footage of your lawn, and if you’re adding Overseeing or Topdressing the price will vary. We  recommend getting a free no-obligation quote.
