What is thatch?

Thatch is the layer immediately below the green of your grass made up of the roots, stems and other organic matter. It can get too thick for number of reasons including poor aeration, too much water and too much nitrogen.

Why is thick thatch bad?

Too much thatch will act like a barrier between your grass and the soil blocking it from absorbing nutrients, oxygen, water and sunlight.

How do I know if I have clay soil?

It could be clay soil if:

it has a grey or red hue instead of dark brown
water doesn’t absorb but instead puddles
it cracks in dry weather

Try a squeeze test: wet a bit of soil and squeeze it. Does it keep its shape if you poke it? If yes, it’s likely clay soil.
