Grubs are an invasive species of pests that feed on your grass roots just beneath the surface of the soil. They will damage or completely destroy the roots, reducing your lawn’s ability to absorb water and nutrients. This will reduce their ability to withstand weather stresses like extreme heat or dryness.
GRUB CONTROL
What Are Grubs?
Damage from grubs can be very extensive and costly, so prevention is key. Grubs will not only cause the grass to wilt and die but they will also attract animals like birds, skunks or raccoons to tear up your lawn looking for the grubs as a food source.
How Do I Get Rid Of Grubs?
The all new Grub TERMINATOR! is the strongest and most effective treatment on the market to eliminate grubs. This granular formulation is as easy as spreading fertilizer and safe for pets and family! We recommend this application twice per year for the best efficacy and grub protection. For severe active infestations, multiple applications may be required within the treatment window to maximize kill rate.
Timing Is Everything.
There are only two small treatment windows to treat grubs each season. Don’t make the mistake of waiting until it’s too late! Grubs can only be treated within a four-week window in the spring between April 15th and May 15th, and then once more in the fall between August 15th and September 15th.
During these windows, the grubs are closer to the surface of the soil while they feed, making them easiest to eliminate. Outside of these timeframes, the grubs have migrated downward, where treatment methods won’t reach them until they surface for root feeding.
How Do I Know If I Have Grubs?
Grubs are one of the most common pests found in the soil of Ontario turfgrass. This is why we recommend prevention, as opposed to waiting to treat grub damage – which can be costly. While easily mistaken for other lawn problems, there are some telltale signs you have an active grub infestation:
Spongy Grass That Pulls Up Like A Carpet
Your lawn will feel spongy underfoot when you walk – this is because the grubs have feasted on the roots, detaching them from the soil. You can even pull the lawn right up like a carpet.
Increased Animal Activity
If you notice birds pecking at your lawn as well as moles, skunks or racoons digging up the grass – this is a clear indication you have grubs. The animals smell the grubs and are searching for food.
Dead Patches From Root Feeding
Odd shaped patches of dead grass that skip or jump around the lawn is another dead giveaway. This is the pattern of feeding for the lawn grubs as they move through the lawn.
Repairing Grub Damage
Once you’ve eliminated your grub problem, you may have to address the damage on your lawn caused from root feeding or animal activity.
Treatments for grub damage can vary depending on the severity of damage. Treatments include lawn seeding, topdressing and overseeding, as well as sod installation.
Maggio will work with you to find the most cost effective solution for your lawn repair.
Prevention Is Key
Lawn repairs can be costly this is why Maggio recommends annual grub treatments during both treatment windows to catch grub infestations before they spread.
