Chinch bugs are tiny insects that inject toxins into the grass blades during feeding causing grass to turn yellow and die.
The injected toxins prevent the grass from absorbing water and nutrients. This means that even after chinch bugs are eliminated, this irreversible damage can spread due to the toxin left behind.
The damage caused by chinch bugs is often mistaken for other lawn issues so diagnosis can be difficult. Signs of chinch bugs include dry, yellow or brown patches of grass. The damage will worsen during hot, dry weather.
Chinch damage is often mistaken for drought, but there is one way to rule out drought:
Resistant To Watering
Watering a lawn damaged by chinch bugs won’t fix the issue.
The Float Test
Another way to check for chinch bugs is using the float test.
- Cut off both ends of a tin can
- Dig one end a few inches into the ground in a green area right next to a brown patch
- Pour soapy water into the can
- Wait 10 minutes to see if chinch bugs have floated to the surface.
- Take note of how many there are to determine severity of infestation
