Professional Lawn Fertilizing & Weed Control

A healthier, greener lawn starts with the right care at the right time.

Ontario lawns go through unique stresses – cold, wet springs followed by hot, dry summers plus unpredictable rainfall and long, snowy winters. Your lawn care program should be built around these local conditions. Maggio’s lawn care program is designed for exactly that.

We use a strategic blend of slow-release granular fertilizers and liquid bio-fertilizers to deliver consistent nutrients to your lawn. Our weed control strategy focuses specifically on the broadleaf weeds that thrive in our local environment, using targeted applications that are both effective and safe for pets and family.

To take results even further, our liquid weed control applications include specialized additives like surfactants and fulvic acid. These help improve product absorption, increase nutrient uptake and support stronger root development—so every application works more effectively.

We know every property is unique and different – that’s why our program is totally customizable – our knowledgeable team will help you choose the add-on services to match your goals and budget.

Lawn Care & Weed Control FAQs

Why should I use a professional lawn care service?

Lawn care is more than simply applying fertilizer. Proper product selection, application rates, timing and weed-control techniques all affect the health and appearance of your lawn.

At Maggio, we use professional products, calibrated equipment and trained technicians to deliver a consistent lawn care program designed around Ontario’s growing conditions. Our technicians also monitor your lawn throughout the season so potential problems can be identified before they become larger issues.

When should I fertilize my lawn in Ontario?

In areas like Alliston, Bolton, Newmarket, Vaughan and across Simcoe County, lawn growth is heavily influenced by our cool-season grasses, clay-based soils, and fluctuating spring and fall temperatures. That means timing your fertilizer properly is key to getting real results.

The most important feeding windows in our region are early spring and fall. This is when your lawn is actively growing and able to take in nutrients efficiently. That’s why we apply a 4-month slow-release fertilizer during these key periods—providing a steady, controlled feed that supports deep root growth, improves colour, and helps your lawn recover from winter stress and summer heat.

Throughout the season, we also include a liquid fertilizer additive with each of our weed control applications. These lighter, targeted boosts help maintain consistent colour and density without pushing excessive top growth—especially important during Ontario’s hot, dry summer stretches.

Is liquid or granular fertilizer better?

Neither is inherently better—the best lawn care program uses each type for what it does best.

  • Granular fertilizer is best for long-term, slow release nutrition to establish long term health resulting in lush, deep green grass.
  • Liquid fertilizer is great for a quick green-up and nutrient boost, but does not come in slow-release and needs to be re-applied often meaning short-lived results and multiple disruptive visits.

At Maggio, we use a combination of slow-release granular fertilizer twice per season plus additional liquid fertilizer within each of our three weed control tanks to nourish your lawn all season long.

Are professional lawn care products safe?

Our lawn care products are used according to their product labels and applicable regulations. After an application, customers should follow the post-care instructions provided by Maggio, including any required re-entry period.

We recommend waiting for the liquid products to dry before going onto the lawn to avoid staining your running shoes or pets paws red from the iron.

What weeds does Fiesta weed control target?

Fiesta is an iron-based herbicide used to control a range of broadleaf weeds commonly found in Ontario lawns, including dandelion, clover, plantain, chickweed and thistle.

It effectively targets:

  • Dandelion (Taraxicum officinale)
  • White clover (Trifolium repens)
  • Silverweed cinquefoil (Potentilla anserina)
  • English daisy (Bellis perennis)
  • Bull thistle (Cirsium vulgare)
  • Broadleaf Plantain (Plantago major)
  • Narrow-leaved Plantain (Plantago lanceolata)
  • Creeping buttercup (Ranunculus repens)
  • Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense)
  • Common chickweed (Stellaria media)
  • Dovefoot geranium (Geranium molle)
  • Common chickweed (Stellaria media)
  • False dandelion (Hypochoeris radicata)
  • Wild chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)
  • Slender speedwell (Veronica filiformis)
  • Healall (Prunella vulgaris)
  • Moss, liverworts, algae and lichens
  • Persian speedwell (Veronica persica)
  • Shepherd’s-purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris)
  • Black medic (Medicago lupulina)

How does Fiesta weed control work?

The active ingredient in Fiesta is iron in the form FeHEDTA. These iron molecules are specially formulated to be absorbed by the foliage of the weeds causing a toxic overload of iron – essentially poisoning them to death.

When will I see results from Fiesta weed control?

You can expect to see weeds begin to shrivel up about 48 hours after application of Fiesta weed control with full results after one week.

Tough or mature weeds with deep roots might need a second application 3-4 weeks later for total control.

Does Fiesta weed control damage my grass?

No, Fiesta weed control will not harm your grass. It is a selective product – which means it will damage some plants but not others.

While your grass may absorb small amounts of the iron in the product, it will act as a nutrient and can result in a darker, greener lawn after application.

What does fulvic acid do for lawns?

Fulvic acid acts like a carrier to help transport nutrients directly into plant cells. This additive helps to boost soil structure, improve your lawn’s tolerance to stress and helps grass absorb nutrients more efficiently.

At Maggio, we add fulvic acid to our spring weed control application to help your lawn prepare for summer heat and drought stresses.

What does humic acid do for lawns?

Humic acid is a surfactant that’s added to Maggio’s liquid weed control and fertilizers to help products penetrate grass blades and reduce runoff or beading – essentially ensuring more absorption and minimal wasted product.

This additive helps improve root systems, aerate compacted clay soils commonly found in Ontario and encourages beneficial microbial activity in soil.

How often will you come to my property?

Our standard lawn care program includes multiple scheduled applications throughout the growing season. The exact timing depends on the treatment and seasonal conditions. Each service includes the treatments outlined in your lawn care program, and we’ll provide post-care instructions after your application.
